Author Vivian Perrits demonstrates the art of creating a mosaic table topper out of inexpensive felt. In this easy project, a design can be made from a variety of sources like wallpaper, pictures, even dishes!
Materials:
felt fabric (by the yard for main body, squares for design)
fusible interfacing
stencil paint
stencil brush
transfer paper
dull pencil
Steps:
- Using a dull pencil so it won't tear the transfer paper, transfer the design onto the main piece of felt.
- Peel paper backing off the interfacing and fuse it to the felt squares.
- Dab stencil paint on all the felt squares. This will add dimension to the finished mosaic.
- Mark a 1-inch grid on the paper backing on each square. Cut each square into smaller, 1-inch squares; then cut each small square into irregular pieces.
- Begin placing irregular pieces on the design, trimming them to fit as needed. When you have about three placed, fuse them to the main body using an iron on a medium-high setting. (Since felt is made of polyester, heat the iron on a polyester fabric setting.)
- Fill in the design; then fill in the background, trimming the individual pieces as you did with the design. Allow the background color to show between all pieces to give an authentic mosaic effect.
- When the mosaic is finished, it can be hand-washed but should not be dry-cleaned.
