Author Vivian Perrits demonstrates the art of creating a mosaic table topper out of inexpensive felt. In this easy project, a design can be made from a variety of sources like wallpaper, pictures, even dishes!

Materials:

felt fabric (by the yard for main body, squares for design)
fusible interfacing
stencil paint
stencil brush
transfer paper
dull pencil

Steps:

  1. Using a dull pencil so it won't tear the transfer paper, transfer the design onto the main piece of felt.
  2. Peel paper backing off the interfacing and fuse it to the felt squares.
  3. Dab stencil paint on all the felt squares. This will add dimension to the finished mosaic.
  4. Mark a 1-inch grid on the paper backing on each square. Cut each square into smaller, 1-inch squares; then cut each small square into irregular pieces.
  5. Begin placing irregular pieces on the design, trimming them to fit as needed. When you have about three placed, fuse them to the main body using an iron on a medium-high setting. (Since felt is made of polyester, heat the iron on a polyester fabric setting.)
  6. Fill in the design; then fill in the background, trimming the individual pieces as you did with the design. Allow the background color to show between all pieces to give an authentic mosaic effect.
  7. When the mosaic is finished, it can be hand-washed but should not be dry-cleaned.
