Guest Teri Daniels shows how to make and decorate vinyl table covers. These clever table covers are easy to make and to clean, and can reflect a variety of themes or holidays.

Materials:

clear and colored vinyl - yardage depends on size of table
colored vinyl - approx. 1/4 to 1/2 yard of each color*
glitter - your choice of colors
dimensional paint
scissors or Fiskars Paper Edgers
optional: fabric or tablecloth to place under the vinyl,
iron-on hem tape

* Cut-outs from the colored vinyl will be used to decorate the table cover.

Steps:

  1. Measure the length and width of the table top. For the drop, add an additional 8 to 10 inches to each measurement.
  2. Using paper edgers or your choice of scissors, cut a piece of clear vinyl to the table dimensions already noted.
  3. If desired, place a finished tablecloth under the vinyl cloth, or cut a piece of cloth the same size as vinyl to place underneath.
  4. If desired, hem cloth with iron-on hem tape.
  5. Using the edgers or scissors, cut out simple shapes related to the theme you are using. For the birthday theme, for example, cut out candles, cakes, balloons, confetti, hats, numbers, etc.
  6. Use dimensional paint and glitter to add accents to each cut-out.
  7. Stick cut-outs onto table cover top and sides.
Tips:
  • Simple, thematic line drawings are usually available in coloring books or clip art sources.
  • Enlarge or reduce as necessary, trace these directly onto the colored vinyl, and cut out.
  • Light fabric colors placed underneath the vinyl are very effective.
  • The vinyl comes in a variety of colors and is perfect for kids to use, because there is nothing to sew together. Vinyl sticks to other pieces of vinyl, so there is no need for glue or other adhesive.
