Beaded candle pots
Guest Lindley Boegehold shows how to make an authentic African table setting with string baubles, beaded candle pots, leather napkin rings and bean balls that make a great decorative accent when placed in a copper bowl on the table.

String Table Mats

Materials:

thick ribbed cotton place mats
jute string
scissors
pins
needle and thread

Steps:

  1. Make a squiggly, free-form design all around the border of the place mat, pinning the string into position as you go.
  2. Sew it in place using small stitches.

String Bobble Trimmings

Materials:

all-purpose or paper glue like Elmer's White Glue
foam craft balls the size of golf balls
roll or skein of paper string
scissors
needle
thread
two small tablecloths

Steps:

  1. Apply glue to the bottom of a ball, then wind on the paper string, working it around the ball in an even spiral. Once the glued part is covered, add more glue to the uncovered part of the ball, and continue winding. When the whole ball is covered with string, make a loop at the top for hanging, and tuck the end of the string under the last spiral.
  2. Use the needle and thread to sew the loop of the bauble to the corner of the tablecloth.

Leather Napkin Rings

Materials:

For each napkin ring:
12-inch tanned leather thong
selection of wooden beads and seed beads

Steps:

  1. Make a knot about two inches from one end of the thong. Thread on a few beads, then tie another knot.
  2. Tie a third knot a short distance from the second knot. Add some more beads, then tie another knot.

Continue threading the beads until you reach two inches from the other end of the thong. Then, tie the final knot. Wind the finished thong around your napkin a few times, and loosely tie the ends to create your napkin ring.

Decorative Bean Balls

Materials:

glue gun and hot wax glue sticks
cotton batting balls (like baseballs) or large foam balls
selection of dried beans and/or berries
shallow copper bowl
optional:
- non-copper bowl
- black spray paint
- gold and copper paint

Steps:

  1. Apply hot wax glue to a small part of a cotton batting ball, then attach beans or berries. Add more glue, then more beans or berries. Continue until the whole ball is covered. Place in a copper bowl for a decorative effect.
  2. In lieu of buying a copper bowl, spray-paint a bowl black, sponge it with gold paint, and then sponge it with copper paint.

Beaded Candle Pots

Materials:

florist medium-gauge wire
wire cutters
natural colored beads, in a variety of shapes and sizes
glue gun and hot wax glue sticks
terra cotta pots
florist putty, or a piece of crock or stone
sand
trowel
candles

Steps:

  1. Wrap the wire twice around the first bead, and twist the end to secure. Thread the wire through the rest of the beads.
  2. Use the glue gun to apply glue to the rim of the pot at intervals. Attach the garland of beads around the rim of the pot.
  3. Plug the drainage hole of the pot with florist's putty, or with a piece of crock or stone.
  4. Fill the pot with sand. Place the candles upright in the sand, pushing them in far enough to be well supported.
