Guest Katie Nelson created the look of designer linens, fabrics and curtains through fabric decoupage. Her craft allows for a stylish look without the hefty designer price tag.
Materials:
100-percent cotton fabric
scissors
iron
fusible webbing
Steps:
- Roughly cut out the fabric motif you want to transfer.
- Iron the back side of the cut-out to the fusible webbing, being careful not to let the iron touch the excess webbing. (It will stick!)
- With the paper still on the back side of the ironed-on webbing, use scissors to cut away the excess webbing and material around the motif.
- Peel the paper off and iron the back side onto the right side of the fabric. This will adhere the motif to the base cloth.
- With scissors, cut along the outline of the motif, through both layers of fabric, to create a finished hem that won't unravel. In Nelson's example, the motif actually became part of the edge of the tablecloth.
Nelson's tips:
- This technique works well for window treatments, bedskirts, tablecloths, sheets and pillowcases. You can even try it on clothing.
- After laundering an item, you should re-iron the motif. Although the design should hold up well in the wash, this preventative measure will extend the life of your original creation.
- Always use a very hot iron.
- Use 100 percent cotton fabric for the base cloth. Mixed blends may melt under a hot iron.
