No-Sew Table Runner

Dress up any table with a no-sew table cover like this one.
Bored with that drab looking dining room table? Why not dress it up with an attractive, yet inexpensive table runner that you can make yourself? Interior-design expert Rosalund Gale provides the easy steps below.
Materials:

fabric remnant
iron
glue gun
ribbon (or tassels)

Steps:


  1. Cut a fabric remnant that equals the length of the table, with the addition of six to eight extra inches on each side. You should now have a single, long strip of fabric. The normal width is approximately 14 inches, so cut the fabric 16 inches wide, which leaves an inch on each side for the seam allowance.

  • Iron down the seam allowance around the entire length of fabric (figure A).

  • If the fabric is likely to unravel, glue down the seam with a glue gun (figure B).

  • Fold in the two corners of each end to form a triangle that comes to a perfect point, then iron.

  • Make a tassel by wrapping the ribbon around two fingers (figure C) about 10 times. Ten wraps will provide 20 tassel strings.

  • Use a short length of ribbon to secure the wraps in the middle (split the difference between the two fingers and tie the ribbon in two or three tight knots).

  • Hold both ribbon ends in one hand and pull the short length of ribbon with the other, then secure with another short piece of ribbon. You will see the tassel emerge. This works best with another person helping. Snip off the very end to create the tassel strands.

  • Attach the secure ends of the tassel along each diagonal seam (figure D) with a glue gun. Use a spoon to smooth out the ribbon and ensure that the glue holds.

  • Glue the trianglular flaps down to bring each end to a point (figure E), with the tassel hanging from the lowest point.
