Upholstered Headboards

Smart Design : Episode SDN-101 -- More Projects »
A headboard is one of the most important choices you can make for your bedroom. It sets the tone for the other furnishings and the mood for the room itself. More and more people are choosing to cover their headboards with fabric today--they're less formal than in years past, but no less imaginative or fun.

As a design element, upholstered headboards are very popular:

  • Fabric headboards are a big trend because people have become bed dwellers, not just bed sleepers. We live in our beds today and typical wood ones aren't as comfortable as upholstered ones.

  • They're clean and sleek with a modern note to them. Some are tufted, triangular or have a camelback and they're all sort of fanciful (figure A).
  • An upholstered headboard can live in a variety of environments comfortably.
  • Vibrant colors and a simple wood frame update the look of the upholstered headboard.

  • If fear of commitment keeps you from choosing any one headboard, then custom-made slipcovers may be the solution. Change the entire look of the bed from a linen beachfront headboard to a luxurious Hollywood style in about two minutes (figure B).
  • When choosing the headboard style or how much padding to add to it, keep in mind how much time you spend in bed. Daily life begins and ends there, so it should be something really comforting, tranquil and peaceful to you.
  • Use recycled architectural portions of buildings, arched window frames, old mantels, iron gates or even hang artwork panels above a bed for one-of-a-kind headboards.

    Materials:

    1/4" plywood
    batting
    fabric
    1" x 4" pine boards
    muslin
    staple gun /staples
    scissors
    ribbon
    wood screws

    Steps:

    1. Cut plywood to desired headboard size and shape.
    2. Fold batting around headboard and staple it in place on the back.
    3. Cut fabric to headboard size plus six extra inches on each side. Put batting-covered plywood face down on wrong side of fabric. Pull fabric taut and secure it along the top, bottom, and then the sides.
    4. Wrap a long piece of ribbon around the headboard and secure it in back. Cut smaller pieces and tie them to the ribbon in a knot at desired intervals to simulate the look of a bow.
    5. Cut muslin the size of the headboard and staple it to the back for a nice finish.
    6. Screw the pine legs to the headboard and prop it up behind your bed.
