Shari Hiller demonstrates quick projects to spruce up a room using fabric:

  • When extra seating is needed in a hurry, buy director's chairs and cover them with a fun fabric. Patterns for the slipcovers can be found at a fabric store.

  • Create a temporary slipcover for an upholstered chair quickly and easily with a full-size flat sheet.
    1. Center the fabric over the chair.
    2. Pull the sheet behind the chair until the bottom just touches the floor.
    3. Tuck the sheet in around the seat and back cushions (figure A).
    4. At the sides, pull the two corners at the bottom and make a bow with the ends (figure B).

  • To get a perfectly matched throw pillow for a comforter set, don't buy the expensive sham covers. Instead, buy an extra set of pillowcases and cover throws pillows you may already have around the house. Simply fold in the extra fabric and tuck it inside the case (figure C).

  • When a vase is not working with a room's color scheme, get a napkin in the right color and center the vase on the napkin. Pull the ends up and secure with a rubber band. Pull the edges over the rubber band and arrange (figure D). This technique also works with lamp bases that need a quick change.

  • For an inexpensive side table, attach legs to a plywood circle. Cover with a tablecloth that hangs to the floor and top with a colorful circle or square of fabric (figure E).
