Materials:
100 percent linen table napkins, preferably in white or cream
fusible webbing
iron
paper
Hot Potatoes rubber stamps and fabric paints*
needle
thread
decorative glass beads
*Guest Mary O'Neil used "frame" stamps and then initialed the linens by stamping a monogram letter within the frame.
Note: Look for antique linen napkins for this project. You can mix and match patterns and shades of whites and creams.
Steps:
- Fold the napkins in half. On each short side, fuse the halves together with fusible webbing. You should have a rectangular-shaped piece of fabric with an opening.
- Insert a piece of paper between the layers of fabric so the paint will not bleed through to the other side.
- Apply the fabric paint to the rubber stamps using a sponge brush, and then gently and firmly stamp designs onto the linen napkin. Repeat with multiple napkins to make slipcovers for all your dining room chairs.
- When the fabric paints have dried, sew decorative glass beads along the bottom edges or just in the corners for a really dressed up look.
Tip: Monograms are ideal for this project since they allow you to personalize each family member's chair, especially for special events or holiday dinners.
