TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham shares tips on preparing for cold weather by treating outerwear so that it will last through the harshness of winter.
  • Make those mittens last. Children are always losing mittens, so try attaching buttons to the cuffs of the coat and stitching a loop on the glove or mitten (see photo), then button it together. Your children will never lose those mittens again.

  • When drying out your jacket after coming in from the rain, remember to hang the coat away from the radiators or heat vents so that you don't shrink it.

  • To keep your toes warm in winter, insulate your winter shoes with insoles.

  • Spray jeans or snow pants with a fabric protectant to give them a water-resistant exterior.
