Figure C
Host Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates how to create personalized quilt squares that are suitable for framing (see photo at right). This is a great way to record the history your family makes every day.

Personalized Quilt Squares

Materials:

sharp color or black-and-white photo
photo-transfer paper (found at craft stores)
scissors
various fabrics and trim
iron
sewing machine

Steps:

  1. Find a sharp photo and have it transferred to photo-transfer paper at your local copy center. If you are computer savvy, you can do this right at home.

  2. Once have the photo sized to your liking, trim it with scissors.

  3. Quilts typically consist of many layers, so choose a variety of different fabrics for your quilt square.

  4. Transfer the photo from the paper onto a light fabric that will serve as the top piece of fabric by ironing (silk absorbs beautifully).

  5. Let it cool, then peel away to reveal the picture on fabric (figure A). Now the photo can be treated as a textile.

  6. Place the photo fabric on the pile of fabric you've laid out (figure B). Hold the layers together with pins and use a sewing machine to join the fabrics.

  7. Add a special touch by adding complementary trim (figure C).

  8. Once the sewing is complete, the quilt square can be mounted and displayed on a wall.
