Host Kathi Cardinalli demonstrates how to create personalized quilt squares that are suitable for framing
(see photo at right). This is a great way to record the history your family makes every day.
Personalized Quilt Squares
Materials:
sharp color or black-and-white photo
photo-transfer paper (found at craft stores)
scissors
various fabrics and trim
iron
sewing machine
Steps:
- Find a sharp photo and have it transferred to photo-transfer paper at your local copy center. If you are computer savvy, you can do this right at home.
- Once have the photo sized to your liking, trim it with scissors.
- Quilts typically consist of many layers, so choose a variety of different fabrics for your quilt square.
- Transfer the photo from the paper onto a light fabric that will serve as the top piece of fabric by ironing (silk absorbs beautifully).
- Let it cool, then peel away to reveal the picture on fabric (figure A). Now the photo can be treated as a textile.
- Place the photo fabric on the pile of fabric you've laid out (figure B). Hold the layers together with pins and use a sewing machine to join the fabrics.
- Add a special touch by adding complementary trim (figure C).
- Once the sewing is complete, the quilt square can be mounted and displayed on a wall.
