Guest Sheila Haynes Rauen designed and demonstrated this project.

Materials:

1 yard of 60" wide fade-resistant nylon flag bunting (background)
1/4-1/2 yard various other colors of bunting
ruler
pencil
scissors
paper for template
black felt-tip pen
light and dark chalk fabric pencils
sewing machine with zigzag stitch
fusible bobbin thread
sewing thread in same colors as fabrics
iron and ironing board
pressing sheet or cloth
tear-away water-soluble stabilizer
Fiskars applique scissors
dowel or flag pole

Steps:

1. Print and enlarge pattern (figure A) as desired.

2. Use a light box for tracing shapes onto nylon with the appropriate color of chalk fabric pencil, or create your own transfer paper by rubbing chalk along pattern lines on the back of the template. You can then place the templates over the nylon and trace over the lines in pencil. This will transfer the outline onto the nylon .

3. Trace lines along blue and green background pieces where the two meet (figure B). Use a ruler to complete the lines along the borders of the green and blue pieces, allowing approximately 2 inches along the bottom and sides of the green and 2 inches along the sides of the blue. Allow several inches along the top of the blue to accommodate the creation of the casing. The size of the casing will depend on the method you will use to hang the flag.

4. Cut around the shapes of each design element, leaving about a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Cut out blue and green background pieces, leaving the allowances for the sides, bottom and top mentioned above and the 1/2-inch allowance along the lines where the two meet.

5. Fill the bobbin of the sewing machine with fusible thread. Fill the top thread with white or matching sewing thread.

6. Stitch along the outlined edges of each piece of nylon to prepare it for fusing into place (figure C). Trim approximately 1/16 inch from the stitching line . Be careful not to cut too close to the stitching.

7. Place green nylon into position on top of the blue fabric. Following manufacturer 's directions, iron it in place to create the whole background of the flag. Take care when ironing nylon not to scorch it.

8. Trace the entire design onto the background to use as a guide for positioning each design element (cat, bird, flower, etc.).

9. Fuse each shape into position by ironing as above, working from back to front (figure D). For example, fuse down the cat first, then the cat's eyes, then the black part of the eyes, etc.

10. Prepare sewing machine for zigzag stitching to outline each shape. You may use matching thread or contrasting thread as desired. Use the same color thread in the top and in the bobbin.

11. On the underside, back the fused area with tear-away water-soluble stabilizer , pinning it into place from the top (figure E). Use one or two layers of stabilizer depending on the thickness.

12. Using a medium-width zigzag stitch with fairly close stitches (not as close as a satin stitch), sew around the edges of each shape in desired color of thread .

13. Then stitch again from the underside using a slightly wider zigzag stitch. Tear away the stabilizer (figure F).

14. Repeat the above process until every shape is in place and outlined in stitching on the front and the back.

15. Use applique scissors to trim away excess fabric (figure G), creating a totally reversible flag, one layer in thickness (figure H).

16. Hem bottom and sides of the flag and make a simple casing at the top to fit the size of the pole you will use to hang the flag.
