Figure C
Designer Michelle Newman demonstrates how to create printed velvet pillows with stencils and stamps (see photo at right).

Materials:

stick pin
padded surface for stamping, such as an ironing board or foam covered with fabric
metallic acrylic paint
sponge rollers
cotton swabs
velvet fabric (best to use fabric with flatter, shorter nap such as crushed velvet )
spouncer (Plaid brand was used on the show.)
stencil
spray adhesive
fabric trim (Conso brand was used on the show.)

Steps:

  1. Pin fabric tightly to the padded surface.

  2. Apply paint to the stamp with a sponge roller (figure A). Wipe any excess paint off the side of the stamp with a cotton swab.

  3. Stamp a design onto the velvet. Repeat to create the design of your choice.

  4. If desired, use a spouncer to create circle designs with paint (figure B).

  5. To use a stencil, spray the back of the stencil with spray adhesive and stick onto velvet.

  6. Use a spouncer, stencil brush or roller to apply paint over the stencil (figure C).

  7. When finished, dry in a commercial dryer to fuse the paint.

  8. Sew velvet to the pillow, adding fringe or trim as desired.
