Materials:
1-yard background fabric
1/4 yard of chosen other fabric colors
1-yard fusible bond with protective paper (for sewing)
black bias tape (narrow and wide)
quilt adhesive spray (optional)
thin batting
marker
Steps:
- Choose a background that is light in color. It looks good and is see-through, which makes the next step easier.
- Lay the background fabric on the design and trace it with disappearing ink, which lasts for about 24 hours depending on the humidity.
- Draw the mirror image onto fusible bond (the paper side) with a marker by turning the design over.
- Cut the fusible bond (keeping the protective layer on) according to color in large pieces (figure A). Be exact only when cutting where the two colors touch .
- Fuse the bond to the fabric according to directions.
- Lay the background piece face up on ironing board. Cut out all of the design pieces; peel off the protective paper, and then put in place on the background following the faint lines. Fuse in place--don't overlap or leave gaps if possible.
- Fuse the bias tape to cover raw edges, make stems and create a stained glass grid.
- Lay a piece of fabric for the backing face down; smooth and spray with quilt adhesive. Place the batting down carefully and spray with quilt adhesive. Lay the top on the batting face up. Smooth and use safety pins to hold the layers together . Be sure all layers are smooth.
- Use black thread to straight stitch along both sides of all the edges of the bias tape (a twin needle doesn't work well for this since it doesn't pivot).
- Straighten all four sides of the wall hanging and finish with the bias tape for binding. If desired, use a zigzag or other decorative stitch for the second step when you bring the tape around the front and try to stitch it down while not missing any of the back.
