Figure A
Materials:

translucent quilt block piecing material
fabric scraps
sewing and machine embroidery thread
hand-dyed silk ribbon
two 6-inch pieces of organza ribbon
velvet leaves and buds
charms
beads
metallic thread
pencil or fine line permanent marker
ruler
iron and press cloth

Steps:

  1. Enlarge and trace desired pattern, including lines and numbers. Note with an asterisk (*) which pieces are the heart to remember to change colors.
  2. Cut a piece of fabric large enough to cover section #1 of the block plus enough to extend at least 1/4-inch on all sides. Pin this fabric wrong side up to the back of the quilt block.
  3. Place fabric for section #2 on top of section #1 (right sides together) so both edges overlap the printed line between the two sections (figure A).
  4. Turn the quilt block over to the side with the patterns and the numbers. Start stitching just before the printed line and stop just after it ends.
  5. Turn the block over and carefully trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch.
  6. Embellish the seam lines within and around the heart with machine embroidery in a contrasting color.
  7. Create a large rose from the silk ribbon.
  8. Wrinkle velvet leaves along the wire to add dimension. Sew in place with beads along the center line and metallic thread (doubled in the needle) at the sides.
  9. Sew rose, organza petals and charms in place.
  10. Back with batting and cardboard and display in a frame.
