Pillow One
Project designed by Pat DeSantis.

Pillow One

Materials:

medium size square throw pillow
buttons - four per pillow - shank style 7/8" diameter
table napkins
iron-on mending tape
scissors
seam ripper or craft knife
iron
needle and thread

Steps:

  1. Sew the buttons at the four corners of the pillow, approximately 1" in from each edge.
  2. Iron a square of mending tape at each back corner of the napkin. A 3" square is large enough.
  3. Carefully cut a diagonal line through the napkin and mending tape at each corner. These cuts will serve as button holes.
  4. Button the napkin over the corners of the pillow. Leave the buttons in place and do the same for many different napkins to change the look of the pillow to suit any mood.

Pillow Two
Pillow Two

Materials:

square throw pillow
table runner
fabric glue
scissors

Steps:

  1. Open table runner to its full length and place it right side down on work surface.
  2. Center pillow form on top of the table runner so that the base of the triangle-shaped end can fold at the top edge of the pillow, leaving the triangle portion to drape over the face of the pillow.
  3. If the length of the table runner is longer than what's needed to cover the pillow, cut the straight end to shorten the fabric so it will accommodate the smaller pillow size. Make a double hem across the cut and secure with fabric glue.
  4. Remove the pillow form from the fabric. With the fabric facing right side down, bring the straight end of the fabric up to the base of the triangle end, gluing the edges of the fabric together to create side seams. Allow glue to dry thoroughly.
  5. Once glue securing the side seams has dried, insert pillow form into the folded fabric. Fold the triangle-shaped flap over onto the front pillow side. Secure and embellish flap with a button or frog closure if desired.
Tip: Use the excess fabric cut from the table runner to make a button-down pillow top as described above for pillow one.

Pillow Three

Pillow Three

Materials:

round pillow or pillow form covered with yellow fabric
2"-diameter button with a shank
1 yard brush fringe - brown
8" bullion fringe - brown and beige
2 yards narrow cord - brown
fabric glue
masking tape
scissors
needle and thread
Tip: To prevent fraying when cutting cord or fringe, tape the end then cut through the tape.

Steps:

  1. Sew button into center of pillow. Catch the thread through the back and pull tight, tufting the pillow.
  2. Take brush fringe and begin rolling it up and gluing at the top band, coiling as you glue. Make it into a circle as large around as the button. Set aside.
  3. With the narrow cord, wrap in four places around all sides, starting and ending under the button, making tufted "petals."
  4. Glue the bullion fringe around the fuzzy circle.
  5. Glue this circle over the top of the button to create the flower center.
Tip: For a fun look in a child's room, add green-felt leaves to the back side of the pillow.

Pillow Four

Pillow Four

Materials:

square pillow
two napkins
two yards cord
fabric glue

Steps:

  1. Position napkins wrong sides together, and glue three sides. Let dry.
  2. Place pillow inside napkin "sack."
  3. Wrap cord around the pillow, package-style, and tie in a bow.
Tip: Pillows measuring 14" to 16" are the perfect size for these projects since most table napkins measure 17" to 18".
