Materials:
wall fabric (two times the wall width)
foam board for borders (cut to 5" in height times the wall width for length)
contrasting border fabric (cut 1" larger than foam board on all sides)
batting (cut 1" larger than foam board on all sides)
staple gun/1/2" staples
bank pins (#32)
cutters
Steps:
Panels
- Determine how many shirred panels are needed to accommodate the width of wall (use two-to-one or twice the fabric width).
- Divide wall into equal sections, use pencil marks at the ceiling and floorboard as lines of demarcation for each panel. Each divided section will accommodate one panel of shirred fabric.
- Position the first panel between pencil lines, stapling at the left and right while turning under the salvage edges.
- Divide panel evenly by eyeballing the center point and stapling. Continue to divide evenly until the panel is gathered or shirred completely.
- At the floorboard, repeat the shirring process only pull fabric taut when doing so to create crisp, straight pleats.
- Repeat this process for each panel until the wall is completely shirred.
Borders
- Lay fabric right side down, and then place batting on top. Put foam board on top of batting.
- Staple at each end, pulling taut. Now staple at top and bottom middle. Continue to cover foam board with fabric and batting as if wrapping a package.
- Secure padded borders at the top and bottom of shirred wall using bank pins. Place one at each corner and one in the middle of each border section. Once in place, snip off the bank pin heads with cutters to make them disappear.
