Mouse Pad Make-Over

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-1111 -- More Projects »
The reaction to this little project came as a total surprise. Everyone in the studio loved it . . . including the men. One even asked if he could have one for his computer at work! These might make good items for the bazaar . . . they are quick, easy and inexpensive to make.

Materials:

mouse pad - ours measured 8" x 9"
double-sided adhesive sheet
suede paper
approximately 20" cording or braid
approximately 20" fringe
fabric glue or hot glue for attaching fringe and cording
scissors
pencil

Steps:

1. Peel the backing from one side of the adhesive sheet and apply to the back side of the suede paper (figure A).

2. Place mouse pad on the back side of the suede paper and trace around it. Cut out (figure B).

3. Peel off the backing on the second side of the adhesive sheet and apply the adhesive to the mouse pad. This should fit exactly. As you peel the backing off with one hand press the suede paper down onto the mouse pad with the other hand to eliminate any bubbles or wrinkles (figure C).

4. Run a thin line of fabric adhesive down the edge of one long side of the suede paper covered mouse pad (figure D). Attach the length of braid or cording to this (figures E and F). Cut off the excess. Repeat on the opposite edge of the pad.

5. Run a thin line of the fabric adhesive across one of the short ends of the suede covered mouse pad. Attach the fringe cutting off the excess. Repeat on the other end (figure G). Done!

Note: Frequently fringe, cording and braid tend to fray when cut. It helps to add a drop of the fabric adhesive to the ends as you cut or apply to the top of the fringe or cording. Just allow to dry and then cut through the glue.
