While velvet may seem like an old-fashioned fabric, designer Joe Nahem shares how practical and modern velvet really is. There are all different types of velvet for all different tastes and decors, and believe it or not, it's not as delicate as one might think. - In the bedroom, living room or on your favorite chair, velvet has broken out of its traditional and formal role. Designers have realized velvet doesn't have to be restricted to a formal setting and it works well on modern furniture. It's also very practical for high-traffic areas of the home.
- Velvet has such a broad range of applications that Nahem thinks it lends itself to all seasons.
- Finally, velvets have different cleaning methods from dry cleaning to washing machines, so make sure to find out what's the best for your piece before getting it home.
Interior designer Kristin Brooks shows homeowner Rory Mikulski how the velvet in her living room can be used to its best advantage:
purple velvet tab-top curtains (Linens 'n Things)
glass and wood nesting tables, purple velvet couch (Somnia)
velvet floor pillows (white, orange and green), lime green silk couch pillows (Urban Outfitters)
round orange pillows (Target)
Bonde bookcase (IKEA)
