Figure F
Host Renai Ellison demonstrates how to make a contemporary tailored slipcover (see photo at right) for a side accent table. The great thing about this project is that it doesn't have to be a real table. As long as you have a square surface and some upholstery fabric, you're ready to go.

Materials:

scissors
upholstery fabric
table, milk crate or cardboard box
tape measure
chalk
pins
fabric glue gun
tassel
cord

Steps:

  1. Cut out a square piece of fabric by measuring the dimensions of the table, crate or box. Measure the height and width of the table surface. Double the height, plus the width, and this will give you the surface area of the fabric.

  2. Chalk off a cross of fabric by measuring the height of the table and marking that number off at each corner (figure A). You will see the cross emerge. Keep in mind that you're marking the underside of the fabric. The double lines allow for the table edge.

  3. Check the dimensions of the fabric by placing the table surface on the fabric and turning it all upright (figure B). Adjust the material accordingly.

  4. Pin down the lines of fabric descending from the four corners (figure C). Go all the way down to the edge.

  5. Starting at the top, remove one pin and glue gun the material together, pressing the two pieces of material together like a sandwich (figure D). Remove the next pin down and repeat the process for all four seams.

  6. Use a fabric scrap to form triangles of cloth. Fold down and smooth the edges, and add a tassel or other embellishment if you prefer (figure E).

  7. Flip the fabric triangle over on top of the table and run a bead of glue across the top, right at the front edge. Press the triangle onto the glue (figure F) and flip the cloth over. This will serve as the table front.

  8. Run a cord along the seam of the triangle front to complete the look.
