Materials:

rotary scissors
cutting mat
see-through ruler/straightedge
invisible pen
decorator fabric (for front)
denim fabric (for back)
piping in contrasting solid color
sewing machine

Steps (for full or queen size bed):

  1. For the front, cut the decorator fabric 54" x 56". Since most fabric comes 54 inches wide on the roll, the width probably won't need to be cut.
  2. Cut two denim pieces 16 inches wide and 56 inches long. These will be sewn to the front later using piping to connect them.
  3. For the back, cut extra long pieces so the back will wrap around to be part of the front: Cut two pieces that are 104 inches long by 54 inches. Leave one piece whole and divide and cut the other denim piece into three equal lengthwise strips (figure A). Two of the strips will be added to the first denim piece for the back; one running down each side lengthwise to make it wider, so that it matches the width of the front decorator fabric. Sew the three back denim pieces together . The third denim strip will be sewn to the bottom of the front (decorator fabric) to make it longer using the piping.
  4. Sew piping around three sides of the front decorator fabric, leaving the top bare. Tip: Before sewing the piping to the fabric, pull out and snip about 1/2-inch of the piping so that it lays flat for hemming. To attach, sew just to the right of the piping (in the groove of a piping foot) (figure B). Just before reaching a corner of the material is reached, snip the seam allowance (figure C). The more snips, the easier it will be to turn and sew on the corners. This allows you to leave the needle in the fabric and pivot as you sew.
  5. After the piping is attached to the center (decorator fabric) of the front, attach the denim strips to the same sides. Remember to place the denim pieces wrong side down when sewing so that when they are flipped over and ironed down, the piping will lay as it should (figure D) and (figure E).
  6. Flip down the top of the front, pin for the hem and finish off.
  7. To sew the top to the bottom, lay the front piece on top of the back, right sides together. The bottom denim piece will be longer. Wrap the bottom back over the top to see where it will lay. Hem this piece before continuing.
  8. Fold the edges of the front and the back down and sew or fuse together so that they lay flat.
  9. Sew the three sides (two sides and bottom) of the front and back together after putting right sides together. Be sure to overlap the hems made in Step 8--put the back first and then place the front on top (figure F).
  10. Turn inside out. Tip: Clip corners to make flipping easier. Press duvet flat. Once turned over, the envelope where the duvet goes will reveal itself (figure G).
  11. Decide on how many buttons to add to the flap, and then measure equal spaces across using a ruler and invisible pen. 14 buttons is good for this size.
  12. To sew the buttons onto the flap by machine, use an open-toe foot. Set the button under the feed dog, lower it and set it up for zigzag. This will sew two of the holes. Repeat procedure for all the buttons across the flap and sew the buttonholes by machine, as well.
