Materials:
1"-wide strips of soft leather (cut to length of desired finished pillow)
needle and thread
leather-bonding glue
feather-filled pillow form (same size as desired pillow)
brown kraft paper
Steps:
- Draw a square the size of the desired finished pillow on a piece of kraft paper.
- Place strips of leather edge to edge in one direction on paper.
- One by one, weave strips of leather edge to edge in opposite direction, creating a lattice effect, without spaces. Flatten and set aside. This will be one side of the pillow.
- Repeat with a second set of strips to create the back of the pillow. The ends of the strips around the pillow can be trimmed evenly once the project is complete.
- Using leather glue, attach top and bottom woven leather squares together on three sides. Using clothespins to hold it, let dry.
- Once dry, insert pillow form, glue fourth side and clip until dried.
- Trim edges until even. Depending on the desired look, create a wide or short flange.
- Finish off the edges with thread and a needle if desired for added detail. Note: Visit a local leather shop for a variety of interesting leathers in all colors, including new embossed styles. Use all black strips for a sleek modern look or two browns for a natural style.
