Two types of pillows may be made by using a basic square shape. For either pillow, cut the fabric into perfect squares, two per pillow. Make them any size, from 14" (small) to 24" (large), adding 1/2" to the desired size for the seams. Place the two squares so that the right sides are together and the raw edges are even. Sew around the pillow, and leave an opening large enough for a hand.
Flange Pillow
Steps:
- Turn the pillow right side out, press it flat, and determine the width of the flange in proportion to the size of the pillow. Use a quilting guide or place masking tape on the bed of the sewing machine to use as a visual aid, being certain to keep the edge a consistent distance from the needle. Stitch most of the way around the pillow, and leave an opening for stuffing. This opening should be on the same side as the original opening.
- Stuff the pillow with small handfuls of good quality polyester fiberfill. Be sure to fill the corners well.
- To hold the stuffing in the center of the pillow past the flange, place pins along the inside stitching line.
- With a zipper foot, stitch the pillow closed, and remove the pins while sewing.
- Close the outside opening with hand-whipping or with a tiny zigzag stitch. If using the zigzag method, let the right-hand swing of the needle fall off the fabric.
Mock Box Pillow
Steps:
- Before turning the fabric right side out, stitch across the corners with about a 4.0 long basting stitch, and leave long threads.
- Gather each corner by pulling the bobbin thread. To hold the gathers, either wrap the threads around the corners or put a rubber band around them (figure A ).
- Turning the pillow right side out will produce gathered corners (figure B). Stuff the pillow with small handfuls of good-quality fiberfill, and whip the opening closed as explained in step 5 of the directions for the flange pillow.
