A chamois absorbs water and cleans and polishes at the same time, making it great for cleaning furniture, mirrors, cars and windows.

TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham shares her favorite uses for chamois cloths.

  • A synthetic chamois is much cheaper and easier to maintain than a genuine leather chamois. However, a synthetic chamois is not as good at absorbing water and dirt and will not last quite as long.

  • Synthetic chamois cloths can be made from rayon, cotton, latex and polyurethane. Choose one that has small perforations or holes that will absorb dirt.

  • Moisten a chamois by putting it in a bucket of warm water with a small amount of dish soap.

  • Use the rough side of a chamois to dry a car or windows after washing, then finish by drying again with a soft terrycloth towel to make sure all water is removed.

  • Use only pure soap to clean a chamois. Do not use detergents, which will suck the natural oils out of a chamois, leaving it dry and brittle. After washing a chamois, rinse it thoroughly, stretch it to its original shape and hang to dry.

  • Never store a chamois in a plastic bag, or it will rot. Instead, store a wet chamois in a mesh laundry bag and hang it up to dry.
