Hip, happening and high energy is how HGTV describes its new show, Design Inc., which takes viewers behind the scenes to see how an interior design firm really works. The three Hs are perfect for Sarah Richardson, the shows young Canadian host, too. Blue-jeaned, lip-glossed Richardson, and her team of young, chic designers never lose their cool while solving problems and implementing smart, customized solutions for their clientsall while the camera is running. Here, get to know a little more about one of Canadas hottest designers. Why do you do what you do? Where does the passion come from? Whats the most fun part of the job? How did you get started?
I love being creative every day. I never set out thinking this would be my career; it just evolved over the years. I got started in TV when an acquaintance from college called and asked if I'd be interested in working on a home and design show. At the time I was working in fundraising but had always been really interested in design and style. I always say that phone call was like getting a call telling you that you'd won Publishers Clearing House. It certainly wasn't an easy job, nor were the years of hard work that followed, but I learned a tremendous amount (most importantly that I loved working in the creative industry of television).
What cant you live without in your home?
Open views and west light. Every one of my homes has always had West exposure. Our current home feels like a treehouse and there is no better place to spend a sunny afternoon than basking in the warm glow of the afternoon light.
What cant you live without on the job?
A bottle of water, cell phone, my fabulous new Saab 97x truck, my design teamand of course, a great pair of jeans and lots of lip gloss!
Who are your design heroes or biggest influences?
Vicente Wolf, Elsie de Wolfe, John Saladino and my mom.
Who are your favorite designers?
Thomas O'Brien, Victoria Hagan and Kelly Wearstler.
Whats your favorite design element?
A hand-blown glass vase by English glass-blower Adam Aaronson that I bought at my friend Thomas O'Brien's shop in Soho NYC while we were in Manhattan shooting a new episode of the show. There's nothing better than finding a treasure when you are in a city away from home!
