House Tour
Room by Room : Episode RXR-1402 -- More Projects »
Shari Hiller starts in the very open, almost undefined entry (figure A). In the big picture, the soft beige walls are gentle on the eyes and the crisp white detail of the railings adds even more interest. - The light wood flooring on the stairs and throughout the house ties everything together. The area rug sets the stage for the colors--all very muted and neutral--and it's one defining factor for this space.
- A lovely oval table adds warmth and helps to bring the scale of the space down to a level that feels homey and comfortable.
Notice that the only colors used are beige, white and wood tones. However, textured walls and fabrics, accessories, wood and rug patterns plus soft light streaming in from the high windows make this a great way to enter the home. Once in the living room (figure B), notice the big picture (or the backgrounds). In this very open plan, the entry walls are the same walls that are in the living room, and eventually in the dining area and kitchen, so they are all done in a very pretty ragging technique.
The beautiful white trim continues on the mantel and the accessory shelves. The rug has a completely different style and pattern than the one in the entry, yet blends very well with it, giving the living area a little softer feel. Since there are no walls to line the furniture up against, the rug anchors the conversation area and helps define the room. The homeowner started by buying all the area rugs first and designed the rest of the house around them.
Caramel-colored furniture is arranged to allow for conversation or for just a couple to enjoy the fire. The richness of the fabric is repeated in the wood tone of the coffee table and side tables. The kitchen in this home is open to the rest of the house and has the same ragging technique on the walls that's used throughout (figure C).

Instead of the traditional picture, two large grapevine wall sconces are hung side-by-side above the fireplace (the greenery hides the wires).

The use of several pillows on the master bed makes you want to jump inside!

A guest room has a punch of color in the bedding but retains the neutral feeling of the house.

- The cabinets are white, which was almost a given because of the trim around the house.
- There is a beige countertop and the light wood floor flows right in as well.
- All of the area rugs in the kitchen, down the hall and in the pantry are the same star pattern for cohesion.
- There are no upper cabinets to block your vision around the house, no hanging light fixtures and even the accessories on the counter are low.
The same star rug design plus the ragged effect on the walls keep things simple in the dining area (figure D). - Light fabrics on the dining and observation area chairs are in keeping with the beige and white scheme.
- It's interesting how formal this can look with the fireplace and upholstered chairs, yet it's right off the kitchen. It proves that there's nothing wrong with painting walls in an open floor plan all the same.
