Change the look of a dining room by simply reversing a few accessories:
Tablecloths Use a formal print on one side and a complementary-colored casual check pattern on the reverse side. Similarly, select tie- or button-on chair covers with stripes on one side and a coordinating solid color and pattern on the other. The stripe may be used also on place mats, which can feature a color-coordinated but slightly different check design.
Consoles Many people think of round accent tables as being appropriate only for the bedroom, but such a table, like the console, can add an extra serving area or space for displays of collectibles. When covered with a skirt, a console can also provide storage space underneath. Use a solid skirt to match the solids of the table setting, and reverse it to a cheerful floral print in the same color scheme. For further variety, add a lamp on the table and change the shade from time to time.
Curtains Reversible curtains, solid on one side and floral on the other, can be enhanced by adding a contrasting welt and changeable tiebacks. For further variation, lengthen the curtains six to 10 inches and allow them to puddle dramatically on the floor.
Rugs A patterned Oriental rug can add warmth to a dining room and even camouflage spills, stains, or other less-than-spotless areas.
