A garden mural changes this from a spare basement bedroom to a relaxing evening destination. Since there are no windows to let in sunshine or outdoor views, it creates the feeling that a lovely garden is just outside the walls of this room.

Glass shelves now hang in what was originally designed as a small closet. Favorite collectibles and greenery add to the garden theme.
Stencil Tips:
  • Stencils create a three-dimensional design when there is more than one overlay . The more layers, the more interesting it will be.
  • Scatter portions of the overall design around the room to tie it all together as demonstrated by these plants (figure A).
  • One concept used by master painters is perspective, which refers to the change in size of objects as they move away from you. Objects that are closer are the largest , most colorful and most clearly defined. Those that are farther away appear continually smaller, more muted in color and less defined. Stencils themselves won't give the look of perspective, but the way you paint and shade the objects can.
  • A second principle is the law of threes (the use of three tones of the same color ). For example, when painting ivy, use a darker green toward the edges, a medium green in the center of the leaf and a lighter color to denote areas highlighted by the sun.
  • If you're a novice, it may be best to start with something small and/or practice on a piece of drywall or cardboard until you feel confident enough to do it on an actual wall.
