  • Splashes of brightly colored accent pieces added to variations of black and white create a new spin on decorating with black and white (figure A). Colors set against black and white make them pop and stronger by comparison, which gives a great deal of flexibility to introduce art and accessories.
  • It's advisable to introduce gray and other tones or colors to a black and white setting for more visual interest and to personalize a space. Green plants are also a wonderful natural addition.
  • Don't neglect the floor when planning a black and white room. Try a painted variation on the traditional checkerboard pattern (figure B).
  • Give any room the black and white treatment with the addition of a few accessories . Instead of being overpowering, these elements reinforce the design.
  • However it's used, there is a certain sophistication, simplicity and geometry in black and white that allows you to really appreciate the form of a house or space and the furniture within it.
