A gold period chandelier in the dining room inspired the gold accents: a gold-leafed cabinet and door. The walls were painted in a partial harlequin pattern and original furniture was bleached and re-upholstered.

Mannequin legs and copper mesh make a unique lamp. The fabric on the couch was a compromise for the owners, one of whom liked black furniture, the other, pastels.
The groovy Sixties are alive and well in artist Erin Lareau's home. Lareau bought a home built in the Sixties that included the furniture custom-designed for it. She shows Kitty Bartholomew how she updated her home's look for very little money, using all her "inherited" pieces for an authentic period look.
  • All the dark wood custom furniture was first stripped then "bleached" with a wash of light green paint mixed 50/50 with water.
  • Lareau created a one-of-a-kind lamp with mannequin legs and copper mesh shaped into a skirt.
  • In the dining room, inspiration began with a gilded chandelier. The walls were painted in half a harlequin pattern--after the first set of diamonds were painted on, Lareau liked the spaced-out look so much, she left out the rest of the diamonds. A cabinet on the wall was first washed with gold, but Lareau wanted a more intense look, so she gold-leafed the entire piece and displayed her iridescent barware in it. She decided to gold-leaf the front door (visible from the dining room) also, a time-consuming project.
  • In the bedroom, Lareau draped the ceiling over the head of the bed with filmy iridescent pink fabric. She hung large block letters spelling "dream" to which she had applied crystal beading over the head of the bed.
  • The family room had a white leather bar that was "very Dean Martin," according to Lareau. She sprayed it black with vinyl spray paint and got new barstools from a restaurant supply store. A swoopy mirror over the couch adds another Sixties touch.
