A low ledge (right) in the living room balances the seating grouping, adds a nice sight line and is a good "landing place" for interesting items such as pictures and plants, says Epperson.
Brad Epperson's clients moved from a five acre plot of land and a large house filled with antiques to a high-rise apartment that overlooks downtown Atlanta. With his help they pared down and went serene. Low, sleek sofas in chocolate velvet anchor the living room while Asian furniture provides focal points and conversation pieces throughout the space. The kitchen tonsu is an unusual piece that allows storage and display space for other Asian items. A low shelf running the length of one wall gives the illusion of higher ceilings and provides space to prop paintings. The Zen feel continues in the dining room with more sleek seating and a table that mimics the ledge on the living room wall. A final nod to a more serene lifestyle is the tiny bonsai garden on the terrace outside. An enlightening design experience overall.

Designers Ho Sang Shin and Bea Pila-Gonzalez share their ideas on why the Zen look has become a hot trend in interior design.
