Designer Susann Thomason shows host Kitty Bartholomew how she mixed furnishings from earlier in the century with new pieces to create a "vintage modern" look in her re-styled 1950s ranch house.

Slate floors make a strong statement and exude a current look but with earthtone colors reminiscent of the 1960s.

The fireplace area is a throwback to the retro look. Grass cloth walls and a faux finish on the hood and terrazzo bring the look up to date.

A black lacquer table is paired with 1920s art deco chairs with burl wood backs.

The kitchen was freshened with a black marble top, slate pebble tiles and hip new handles.

Thomason replaced all of the solid wood doors in the house with translucent glass inserts.

The family room is a combination of different eras. The side table in the lower lefthand corner is an 1870s antique from Brazil, the coffee table is a modern piece from the '80s, the sofa is brand new and the green chair in the center is styled after a 1970s piece.
