Gold leaf is applied in a broken pattern to give an opulent patina to molding.
Designer Edward Turrentine shows Kitty Bartholomew how to make Asian decorating elements in a bedroom suite flamboyant and colorful. The design of the opulent chinoiserie bed is a copy of an old opium bed. He recommends using an exaggerated piece, like the opium bed, to help carry off a theme.

The walls received a glamorous treatment in keeping with the tone set by the bed . The warm golden color was highly glazed (varnish can also be used) to heighten and deepen the color. This technique has the added benefit of being easy to clean. The deep molding at the ceiling was gold-leafed for even more glamour, but the leafing was applied in broken pieces rather than as a solid. This adds to the aged, traditional look. Turrentine paired the elaborate bed with an oversize Italian painting for a mix of periods and styles. He suggests using a painting of exaggerated size in a small room to make the room seem taller. The pictures on either side of the bed are framed between two pieces of glass, so that the wall shows through and essentially become the mat for the painting.

Color and finish were important in the bathrooms as well. The walls in the lady 's bath were painted a high-gloss shade of peach, which Turrentine believes is complementary to all skin tones. In the gentleman's bath, he painted the walls a deep green, even though the room is relatively small. He explains the intense color makes the room look larger and deeper.
