Figure B
Figures A and B — Portland, Ore., is close to Pacific Ocean and many spectacular mountains. The city was founded in 1851 and was home to rugged fur traders. Montgomery Drive boomed when Portland became a major shipping port along the Columbia River in the late 1800s. Known for its rainy climate, Portland is rich with a lush landscape. Montgomery Drive is lined with large Douglas firs and a splendid array of architecture.

Figure C — This dream house is a classic white Colonial revival that was built in 1926. A grand portico frames the entry with columns that reach two stories high and a pediment above them.

An original chandelier illuminates the open foyer. The living room (figure D)showcases the classical design elements of the colonial style. An elegant fireplace is the centerpiece of the room, featuring Italian travertine marble. The walls in the study are adorned with dark wood bookcases and brass sconces. This impressive home brings light to Portland's lovely Montgomery Drive.

Figure E — Built in 1995, this is the only contemporary house along Southwest Montgomery Drive. The hilltop location allows for spectacular views of the city and Mt. Hood.

Figure F — The abundance of light and the transparent decor evoke a grand sense of space. Because of the views, the homeowners put the living room on the top floor. Open bookcases divide the living and dining rooms. The contemporary masterpiece is a wonderful addition to this dream drive.

Figure H
Figure G — A wealthy Portland businessman had this English Tudor-style home built in 1900. Exposed timbers and a gabled roof decorate the exterior. A front porch adds an inviting feeling to the look of the house.

Figure H — Though it has gone through much renovation, the dining room remains a vestige from the past. Blossoms of light shine through a flowered skylight at the top of the stairs. This Tudor is a striking contrast to the many American-born styles along Montgomery Drive.

Figure J
Figure I — A transplanted Easterner designed this New England-style house in 1909. Reluctant to be relocated in the Pacific Northwest, the original owner added details that reminded her of home.

Figure J — The octagonal-shaped room is one of those distinctive features. The third generation homeowner keeps the dining room decorated in family heirlooms, just like her grandmother. The major difference is that the current homeowner adores her Portland address.
