The Quiet Kitchen

Pennington likes how the kitchen is quietly part of the living space and doesn't scream, "Kitchen!" Yet it adds stylistic quality: a central island with black countertops contrast with the white cabinetry. Subtle accents of color — turquoise around the kitchen island, magenta on top of a cabinet — are highlighted at night by ceiling-mounted lighting. A rollout larder serves as a pantry, and a refrigerator with freezer drawers is outfitted with the same white panels. Using modular components, Pennington devised a table on casters for use in the open living/dining area.
