Stennes preserved the staircase and made it a focal point of the home. Other homeowners in the neighborhood moved their stairs, but Stennes thought it gave the houses a bowling-alley feel. Thayer loves the effect of the central staircase. It's open so you can see beyond the staircase, but it also delineates the front room from the living room to create two separate spaces.
