A wall shelf in Andrew’s bedroom also has room for hanging clothes.
Giana Gonzalez and Andrew McBride are young architects who met in college and decided to live together after graduation to share the cost of living in a city. Although they are on a small budget, the friends have managed to substitute ingenuity for money in their modern 750-square-foot apartment. The main color in the space is white, but by adding some colorful accent details they've made the home a hip hangout for all their friends. To save money on coveted designer lamps and furniture, the two put their heads together and designed their own versions of the pricey originals with supplies from a local hardware store.

Expert Tips:

  • When you use the color white, be sure to add personality with some well-placed shots of color.
  • Nature—potted plants, flowers in vases—adds warmth to a small space.
  • Great style doesn’t have to be expensive; just be creative with what you have.
