Paul Goodman's 1,000-square-foot 1930s bungalow was in desperate need of a fresh coat of paint when he purchased it. His first inclination was to paint it all white--inside and out--to make it look bigger, but what he really wanted was a home that was warm, cozy and masculine. Designer Lynn Morris shares how she decorated his home to create a cozy space.
- The home already had a few charming architectural details, like the adobe-style fireplace with the original brick trim and a cove ceiling with a rectangular insert. To enhance the details, Morris added a chair rail in the living room and applied a darker paint color below and a faux finish above.
- Morris was able to blend the homeowner's two favorite styles--Mission and Southwestern- -using clean-lined furnishings, bright Southwestern prints, wrought-iron accessories and glazed ceramics. Black accents were brought in to add drama.
Also, she shares some tips for decorating a small home:
- Choose a vibrant paint color or apply a faux finish to add depth to walls.
- Pull furniture away from walls and arrange on diagonals.
- Decorate the walls with interesting accessories.
