Compact Kitchen

Kitchen Design : Episode KDE-305 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn visits Barbara Mavin, who bought a 20-year-old home in an historic area with a tiny dark kitchen that lacked a dishwasher. With the help of designer Dee David, Mavin gutted the kitchen and introduced light colors, beautiful tile and, by using compact appliances, a dishwasher.

The angled corner allows for a lazy Susan above the sink. Beveled-edge Formica counters complement the Italian ceramic tile backsplash.

The Italian ceramic tile floor, with a rug design in the center, is the room's focal point.
  • White cabinets, white appliances and light walls make the tiny work area feel much larger.
  • Narrower appliances (the refrigerator, stove and dishwasher) opened up enough room to add the dishwasher.
  • A three-tier lazy Susan over the sink and pull-out drawers made what little storage space there is more accessible and functional.
  • The imported ceramic tiles create the room's focal point. An inexpensive field stone tile is used for the background on the floor. A rug pattern using more decorative tiles is in the center of the floor. The same tiles are used for the backsplash. This repetition of color and materials keeps a small room from feeling too busy.
  • Under-cupboard lights makes the space bright and usable.
  • A stacked washer and dryer in the corner is efficient, compact and functional .
