Every inch of space in the apartment is put to use. A small corner was transformed into a convenient office space, using the same clean lines and contemporary style found in the adjacent kitchen.

The focal point of the small but efficient 150-square-foot kitchen is the crescent-shaped island that has an 18-inch stainless work counter paired with a curved glass extension used for dining.

Host Joan Kohn visits Jonathan Lev, who renovated a run-down neoclassic apartment to suit his contemporary lifestyle. The tiny kitchen, only 150 square feet, was completely opened up to the rest of the living area. Its sleek good looks and contemporary style, achieved with the help of architect Stephen Magliocco, provide an interesting counterpoint to the Old World details in the rest of the apartment.

  • The kitchen is laid out in an efficient galley style, with all the appliances lined up on one side of the room.
  • Stainless steel is used to great effect in the small, open kitchen. Counters and appliances are stainless steel, as is the hardware.
  • Light maple wood cabinets are used to warm up the look of the room and offset the coolness of the steel.
  • The island counter consists of an 18-inch strip of stainless used for food prep, and a crescent-shaped glass extension used for dining. The transparency of the glass expands the visible space.
  • A large bay window, original to the building, floods the room with light and makes it feel larger than it is.
