Bold colors are used to highlight the alcove area and the ceiling.
Matt Fox explains various paint terms with regard to color and bases:
  • A deep-tone color means the colorants are mixed into a deep-tone base, which has some white pigment in it so it covers well. The small amount of white pigment makes the color more opaque, and therefore easier to cover in two coats.
  • When cans of deep-tone and pastel bases are compared, the first has an almost milky white quality whereas the latter is pure white. Pastel bases are used for lighter colors because most of the lighter colors from the fan deck or color rack use very little colorant (the pure tint color that's added at the paint store).
  • Less of the product is put in the deep-tone base can to provide room for the additional colorant required.
  • Since the white in the pastel base gives better coverage, the deep-tone colors require more coats.
