Figure A
Running a home is like running a business. If you also bring work home but don't have an extra room to convert, learn ways to make an inviting and efficient home office in unique spaces and ways.
  • Home offices run the gamut from full-time careers to keeping up with home services, bills and expenses.
  • Be creative when looking for a workspace in a house. Instead of the typical den or office, try setting up a corner unit in a bedroom, kitchen or under a stairwell with stacked shelves above for useful storage.
  • Computer stations hidden within armoires are on the cutting edge of home offices (figure A). This allows for productivity but can be closed to hide the work items when not in use. Put one in a large foyer, the side of a kitchen or a bedroom.

  • Look for multi-functional pieces such as a sofa table that can also be a writing desk, a writing desk that can become a sideboard or a portable writing table that has room for pens, paper and a drink.
  • There are a number of things people do in their offices from working on a computer to filing and storing papers, so adjustable designs are very important. Use a CPU holder that lifts it off the floor for protection, which leaves the desktop clear for moveable shelves (figure B).
  • Think about how a home office design will fit into your existing decor so it coordinates with the space. Use a frosted glass, metal or plastic top in a contemporary setting or consider a wood desk in a more traditional room.

Add a personal touch to your home office with a custom desktop blotter. Make one with fabric and batting or highlight a favorite piece of fabric in a Plexiglas frame.
    Desktop Blotter

    Materials:

    Masonite
    cotton batting
    fabric
    hot glue
    tape

    Steps:

    1. Cut Masonite to desired size and glue four-inch-wide batting strips to the two sides.

    2. Glue fabric to the back of one side and tuck it under the batting. Continue gluing it to the flat center and tuck it under the other piece of batting. Pull it around to the back, and then cover the edges of fabric on the back with tape to prevent fraying.
