Video: A bar counter is the perfect solution in an area that's too small for a table and chairs.

Steps:
  1. Measure the space and determine how a bar might be mounted. Establish the height of it by measuring a stool and allow for leg room (39 inches in this case).
  2. Draw a reference line on the wall to mark the placement of the bar (figure A).
  3. Cut a piece of birch plywood for the top to desired size. Cut three 1" x3" pieces of aspen to trim the edges and give it some thickness. Cut a fourth piece of aspen for a backsplash.
  4. Router the front edge of the counter and the backsplash.

  • Sand, stain and add protection with polyurethane. Mount a back support board by locating studs and drill pilot holes before screwing it in place (figure B).

  • Attach L-brackets to the back brace so that the bar can rest on them and be screwed in from the bottom (figure C).
  • Place the bar on top, check for level and screw the side piece(s) right into the wall.
