Bar Counter
Room by Room : Episode RXR-1011 -- More Projects »
Steps: - Measure the space and determine how a bar might be mounted. Establish the height of it by measuring a stool and allow for leg room (39 inches in this case).
- Draw a reference line on the wall to mark the placement of the bar (figure A).
- Cut a piece of birch plywood for the top to desired size. Cut three 1" x3" pieces of aspen to trim the edges and give it some thickness. Cut a fourth piece of aspen for a backsplash.
- Router the front edge of the counter and the backsplash.
Sand, stain and add protection with polyurethane. Mount a back support board by locating studs and drill pilot holes before screwing it in place (figure B).
Attach L-brackets to the back brace so that the bar can rest on them and be screwed in from the bottom (figure C). Place the bar on top, check for level and screw the side piece(s) right into the wall.
