Designer Barry Dixon shares how he created a unique, opulent space out of a small nook off a second floor hallway:
- Four comfortable chairs designed in wide-striped orange fabric face one another with a large, similarly colored ottoman in between the chairs to provide a place to prop your feet or rest a tray of drinks.
- Bookshelves sandwich the space offering plenty of room for reading materials or accessories. The book ledge along the back wall is placed on an incline for easy reading.
- Drapes surround the room and bookshelves, providing a nice, quiet space read or have an intimate conversation. They can be drawn closed or left open to expose bookshelves, much like unveiling like artwork in a gallery.
Here are some tips for creating your own special space out of a small room:
- Let the lighting set the mood. Instead of a ceiling light, use sconces or lamps with low-wattage bulbs for soft, ambiant light.
- A small space is the perfect place to experiment with bold color, especially if the space won't be used often. In this space, Dixon centered around a burnt orange color.
- Furniture is key when designing such an intimate space--the scale of the pieces should relate to the scale of the room.
