Field reporter Joe Lovitt meets with organization expert Pam Hix, who offers ideas for organizing a one-bedroom efficiency apartment.
The key to making the most of a small efficiency apartment is to organize the room into a multifunctional space.
Here one small room has been furnished to serve as a combination living and sleeping area.
First start with a futon that serves as a sofa during the day and folds out into a bed at night. Another option is to place one twin bed against a wall and use several throw pillows to transform it into a day bed.
Keep out-of-season clothes in suitcases, and store the suitcases under the futon or day bed.
A large trunk is very useful for a small apartment. Not only can various items be stored in the trunk, it can also serve as a table or even extra seating if needed.
Use a bookcase not only as a place to set books, but also as a room divider. Create a dressing area by dividing off one corner of the room with the bookcase, then adding hooks and storage cubbies to the corner.
Use plants to add to the atmosphere and create privacy.
A workstation with a home computer fits great in the corner across from the dressing area. Use the hidden space to store things.
Put the desk on wheels so that it is easy to roll out and store things behind it in the corner.
Stackable baskets are great for storing all sorts of things. They're attractive and require a minimum of floor space.
