Red painted cabinets and new flooring jazz up a small bathroom.
Joan Steffend visits homeowner Mary Bordewick, who has clever ideas for using every inch of space in her tiny bungalow that is home to her family of five.
  • The kitchen and dining room were opened up to each other to become a work/sitting area. A stained-glass door is suspended between the two areas to help define them .
  • The old family room, no longer necessary because of the sitting room, became a bedroom.
  • Storage throughout the house is provided by painted dressers. A dresser in the kitchen under the window adds extra counter space. A dresser in the bath replaces a linen closet.
  • Cafe curtains in the kitchen are simply dish towels hung with clip rings.
  • A brick floor was transformed with primer, colorful latex paint and a coat of urethane.
  • The tile floor in the bath was recovered with a remnant of vinyl flooring. A template of the floor was made with newspaper, the vinyl was cut and laid directly on top of the tile and sealed with caulk.
