Fabrics are layered over a worn bedspread for an exotic look.
Kitty Bartholomew visits the home of designer Sigrid Insull, who broke conventional rules about decorating small spaces when she decorated her 840-square-foot home. Insull created an interesting space by:
  • Using dark colors and large-scale furniture in a quiet color scheme and limited patterns to create a sense of serene intimacy.
  • Filling every inch of the walls with artwork and displaying an extensive collection of Asian sculpture in every room.
  • Furnishing her square dining room with a square table and dining chairs upholstered with a Persian rug too worn for display.
  • Using two similar-looking gas stoves side by side instead of a large, expensive commercial cooktop in the kitchen.
  • Placing the bed on an angle and layering multiple fabrics over the bedspread for an exotic look.
  • Hanging unframed Indian paintings on sliding closet doors.
