Design for the Senses: Hearing

Designing a space with a sensitivity toward sound and hearing can be one of the most rewarding decisions one can make when it comes to design. Whether you are minimizing sounds from the busy world outside or trying to draw them into your home, the sounds we hear in a space directly impact its personality and overall ambiance. Having a clear understanding of the purpose of our spaces will reveal to us what we ultimately desire to hear.

Use Hedges as a Sound Barrier
The hedge made up of a row of six-foot arborvitae (at right) offers these homeowners the privacy and sound barrier needed in order to separate their front yard from the sounds of their neighbors' connecting backyard and garage.
