3. Add Surprising Accessories
"Don't err too much on the side of caution" when selecting coffee-table accessories, says designer Nancy Barsotti. Instead, the designer says to "try something surprising." Some ideas:



  • Long-lasting fruits and even vegetables, like artichokes, are pretty when clustered in a bowl or squat vase.

  • A bowl filled with pebbles or a piece of gnarled driftwood will bring the outdoors in.

  • For conversation pieces that add sculptural detail to your tabletop, choose a weathered garden statuary, "found" objects like a rusted metal grate, and bits of architectural salvage, like a chipped wooden corbel.
