Tips for Terrific Texture

Sensuous curves, rough-hewn edges, shiny pillows, nubby fabric--there are a plethora of ways to add textural interest to any room on floors, walls and accessories.

Go Wild on the Walls
The walls, as the backdrop of a room, can be a showcase for texture. If you are an off-white addict, consider using one of the many faux techniques such as ragging, combing, or sponging. Using just a bit of any darker hue, faux techniques bring walls from flat to fabulous, while still keeping very much in a neutral palette. Wallpaper lovers will revel in the effect created by grass cloth and faux suede papers. For the more formal: brocade wallpapers add wonderful texture. If on the other hand, you crave the lusty flavor of a Tuscany Villa, consider a Venetian plaster treatment for your walls, and fill the space with Italian clay pottery and tapestry linens. If sassy is more your style, go for a metallic or iridescent paint treatment on the walls. Add a coat of metallic glaze (copper is particularly hot!) over your richly hued walls and watch the room become reignited with texture and drama. And don’t forget the fifth wall: the ceiling!
