Pairing unlikely pieces together like a vintage sofa and modern pillows gives a room an eclectic look. Designer Sharne Algotsson explains that mixing and matching old and new furniture, accessories and collectibles can be a great way to decorate a space:
The key to creating a smooth transition between old and new pieces is to use a common thread like repetition in color, shape or origin. Color through the use of fabric can also go a long way to giving favorite antique furnishings a modern flair.
This dining room combination is a wonderful example of old and new together with contemporary faux leather on antique chairs.
The repetition of curves ties this antique globe and new science beakers together even though they were designed centuries apart.
Another tie that binds old and new together is origin. In this breakfast nook an antique French clock says the time is always right for dining at this contemporary French country table. Bold contemporary drapes complete the blending of old and new.
With the help of designer Sarah Zorochin, homeowner Marissa Giunta discovered that grouping cherished family pieces and contemporary furniture can create a fabulous look in her living room:
This living room is in search of a style. Family heirlooms and mid-century modern furniture mingle side by side but don't complement each other in this crowded space.
Relieving the space of some clutter opened it up to highlight favorite pieces including a bar and two Barcelona chairs. Grouping contemporary and vintage collections separately emphasizes each.
